this is the end

Published by nekudotayim under Random

They say all things must eventually come to an end. I’m going to seek a counselling session.

As a matter of fact, I just booked me one.

some like it hot

Published by nekudotayim under Random

Joe: “Hi, Jerry. Everything under control?”
Jerry: “I’ve got things to tell you.”
Joe: “What happened?”
Jerry: “I’m engaged.”
Joe: “Congratulations. Who’s the lucky girl?”
Jerry: “l am.”

Some Like It Hot sure is one of the funniest movies I’ve seen.

¿el computador, o la computadora?

Published by nekudotayim under Random

quite hilarious.
The men’s group decided that “computer” should definitely be of the feminine gender (”la computadora”), because:

  1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;
  2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;
  3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and
  4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

The women’s group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine (”el computador”), because:

  1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;
  2. They have a lot of data but still can’t think for themselves;
  3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and
  4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

Boy, aren’t you glad you speak English, or any other languages that don’t promote gender of things.

weather report

Published by nekudotayim under Random

“Ryan’s gonna do the weather, he’s a tall freak with big nose and fancy shoes.”

a couple of days ago we got rain all day long, and how I loved it. On a typical day it can be a little difficult to sleep during daytime (well it’s me). So a little rain would certainly help. And I got it all day. I slept like a log. But yesterday it was bright as bright can be. No complaint, though, time for some laundry, right?

on a not so bright note, this particular month of the year is at it again. I started to get those dreams coming back. But this time the dreams are not as bad as they once were. I am portrayed to have been content just to watch the river stream to the sea without wanting to swim in it myself. The well is dry and I’ve thrown the bucket away down, but I keep the rope in the attic to dust. The band is gone but I’m now singing to myself. I watch the stream and I say ‘bide thee well’ and till we meet again.

Thou shalt not forget.

in the name of the father

Published by nekudotayim under Random

seen In the Name of the Father the other day; starring Daniel Day-Lewis (the reason I decided to see it, by the way). I must say that I’m impressed.

The opening credit sequence is one of the betters; the title song is just good!

I’ve seen only four other works of Daniel Day-Lewis, but all of them have been strong performances! (well, perhaps not so strong in The Last of the Mohicans). Too bad he didn’t work on many films and chose another profession; but Martin Scorsese certainly did a miracle luring him to star in The Gangs of New York. yeah, the Butcher!

by the way, back to In the Name of the Father.
Two third into the movie, there is this movie-screening scene inside the jail, where there is this IRA man planning to stage some action on the jail-warden. So one by one the inmates enter the screening room, and after the door is closed,.. the projector runs… a familiar tune starts to the chills of my heart. We don’t get to see what’s on yet, because the camera is still sweeping through the inmates. BUT, I almost jumped when I heard that tune! It’s The Godfather’s opening sequence!

Only one scene is featured, though, that is the “garden scene between Don Corleone and Michael”, supposedly to highlight the relationship between the father and son (Daniel Day-Lewis’ character and his father).

This one particular Godfather’s scene happens to be my most favorite scene from The Godfather’s Trilogy. I know the dialogs by heart. Apparently not much attention was given to the editing of this segment, because the dialogs are not in their proper order. It’s almost become an instinct to me to quickly shout [silently] “hey! that’s not the proper dialog!”. Well, don’t do that to my favorite movie scene.

But that’s not important. This movie is well worth seeing.

(I just realized that Firefox has this spell-checkers on html form’s input. I thought it’s the Rich Text plugins in Wordpress. Well, Momma said stupid is what stupid thinks)

(How do we italicize some quote that happens to be inside an italicized paragraph?)

a wedding site

Published by nekudotayim under Random

my house mates are getting married and I’ve put together some design for their pre-wedding website. God bless you, guys.

They’ve been together for quite a long time, friends had always asked when were they going to take their relationship to the next step. Well, ask no more. The day has arrived.

as for the site, I’m not a web-designer, so I think I should be excused should anyone finds something (or the whole thing) unprofessional looking. Excuse is a bad excuse, ain’t it?

strongly-typed language

Published by nekudotayim under Random

for years I’ve known the term “strongly-typed language”, as average programmers have.

Despite correctly interpreted the meaning of it, apparently in all those years I was totally wrong in its literal construction. I’ve always thought the “typed” part is from the verb “type”, as in “pressing the keys on keyboard”. It made sense to me then. We have to “strongly type” our code, of which I translate the “strong typing” to be “everything is forced, your variables are forced to be declared and to stay afterwards within the declaration limit”. The two words, “force” and “strong”, resonate well, don’t they.

While reading some article just now, it occurred to me that the “type” part comes from the noun “type”, as in “my variable is of Integer type, it has to be declared as such type, and to be that type throughout its life”.

Not the verb. I feel stupid.

american pie

Published by nekudotayim under Random

only recently that I discovered Don McLean’s song titled American Pie. It’s such a nice song that I found myself humming it quite a lot these days. I don’t know it to the words, but obviously the story behind the song is rather a sad one, although I was not quite sure what it’s all about.

then there is this annotated faqs. Seems like a personal history book crammed into one song.

the other song sitting often on my current playlist is Burt Bacharach’s Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head, soundtrack of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the latest film in my favourite list.

Funny how you strongly associate certain songs with the films in which they appear. For instance, The Door’s The End; the moment I heard this song, the opening scene of Apocalypse Now would come to mind right away; the napalm bomb burning the entire trees and the noise of spinning blade of the ceiling’s fan interspersed with those of helicopter outside.

How about Tracks of My Tears; I quickly picture the getting-high scene from Platoon.

What do we hear in the background when Dennis Hopper told Christopher Walken the story about the Sicilian’s ancestry in True Romance? I so associate that music with the dreadful scene, so when I heard the same music in Carlito’s Way (when Carlito, from outside the window in the rain, watched Gail dancing), I thought something bad would happen.
(The song itself is from some sort of French opera**, I’m not sure, although it’s quite popular; used in other movies as well).

And there’s of course As Time Goes By in Casablanca. As a matter of fact, this is perhaps the most popular song featured in a movie. “Play it once, Sam, for old times’ sake”.

** according to IMDb, the song is Sous le dôme épais où le blanc jasmin, but I came across another soundtrack listing, the title listed as Viens Mallika Sous Le Dome. They seem to agree on the ’sous le dome’ part, though.
